Early this semester we were instructed to do weekly writing about how we feel about writing skills, and what writing skills we want to improve in or develop by the end of FYS 183-Epistolary Exploration. I saw that I struggle a lot with grammar so that was one of the areas that I would like to improve in. I don’t think I improved in that area because I honestly didn’t know how to go forth and work on it. When I would write there were so many mistakes that I didn’t catch until Keanna, FYS writing assistant, would look over it and inform me of my grammar errors. Furthermore, I think I improved in the area of being more creative with writing which was another goal for me because I wrote a couple of creative themes like my paper on war letters for example “It’s interesting how powerful letters can be, and how much depth they can hold with an ink pen and a piece of paper. How much they carry a soul across the ocean to a man that is fighting a bloody war.” I am used to writing poetry but I struggle with being creative when I have to write analytical essays, so being able to come up with that line made me feel proud writing it.
The topics I wrote about was pretty exciting because some topic like my Anais Nin essays focuses on erotica literature I have never written an essay with a focus being erotica and sex before this semester it was interesting to write about since I enjoy learning about the science and psychology of erotica. I like to think over the semester I have achieved some of the goals, I didn’t achieve all of them like grammar and re-reading my work out loud but I know I will continue working on the goal. I just need to be more confident in reading my writing. I just don’t like hearing my words, because they sound cringy in my opinion. However, I have gotten into a writing process, in which before I start writing anything I do a free write to clear my head. It helps me a lot because I get to be random for a second and not feel pressure to write coherently, I can just write to write. My writing process continues to be a complex journey, I want to continue doing creative writing but I also would love to do more historic creative writing the most. Taking this FYS as introduced to that genre and I want to continue practicing writing in it.
