What gives sex its foundation? What is its foundation, its power? What drives the blinding of lust? Give the ecstasy to Sexual pleasure? What makes good sex suitable, and builds the want even more? Is sex just a mean for reproduction or is it more? Anais Nin was responding to one of the “Collectors”, he wrote to her before, asking her “leave out the poetry” and “concentrate on sex.” in her short stories she was selling for 1$ each. In Anais’s letter, she argues what gives sex its necessity. She argues over erotica and the purity it brings to human beings. Anais wrote in her letter to the collector about his ignorant of sex and erotica “Sex loses all its power and magic when it becomes explicit, mechanical, overdone when it becomes a mechanistic obsession. It becomes a bore” wrote Anais. As humans we are not fated for inherently monogamous however, we desire diversity and creativity in our sexual life. Not saying we can’t be in a monogamous relationship we can, however, it won’t change the lust for a difference in the bedroom. In today’s society, we have grown from the box idea of sex just being a physical act of reproduction, instead, we see it as a meaningless activity to use for social praise and credit. There is an absence of Erotica in our sexual lives over the past decades, which has shaped the word erotica into unrealistic expectations for sex. Focusing more on a person’s physique, not their emotional intimacy. In my letter of note, “Sex does not thrive on monotony.” by Anais Nin, I argue sex foundations build on connection, not glorification. Sex is a physical act but one with an extension of surrealism and connections.
The emotion driving Anias to her wonder of sex and writing was thought that she was suffering from a sickness and void, that she wanted to gasp and understand. When early and mid-late 20 century was the era of women fighting to be heard and seen as more than objects for men’s sexual desires but rather as sexual beings themselves. Anais wrote 35+ books, fictional diaries, and short stories on self and sexual intimacy. her work was highly controversial because of her advocate for pro-abortion, LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, and courage against sexual self-exploration. She looked as active by some and look at as slut by most of the public because she was outspoken for her time about sexual topics. Know mostly from her Under the Glass Bell (1944), Seduction of the Minotaur (1961), and one of the final books Delta of Venus Erotica of Anais Nin(1977).
Anais Nin was an open-minded daringly diarist and writer in the 20 century, born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France on February 21, 1903, and died on January 14, 1977, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA. Anais was the daughter of three children, growing up with was abusive father, Anais had seen a cruel world before she could reach the age of three, her father abandon his family, his wife, and kids for rich college students. Anais’s education didn’t go any further after the age of six. She left school and worked as a model for an artist. Anais spent most of her childhood writing in her diaries. Raised in NYC at the age of 11 Anais, her mother, and two brothers (Thorvald and Joaquín, ) were forced to sail for NYC, from France in 1914, because of her father’s romantic affairs. On board the ship, Anaïs starts writing letters to her absent father to lure him back to the family after abandoning them, trying to lure him into coming back. Too hurt to send it Anais never dent the letter leading to years of searching and questioning about why she never sent the letter. She returns to Europe in her teens until the beginning of World War II she return back to the states. There she would meet her first husband Hugh Parker Guiler, a Cuban writer in the 20 century.
Anias is known to have been free a woman in her time, a woman that blended only to her rules and her alone. “for a lover, when he is aroused by true love, can run the gamut of centuries of love lore, What a range, what changes of age, what variations of maturity and innocence, perversity and art, natural and graceful animals.” From her father leaving to moving to the states, Anais has spent most of her childhood obeying others and not having her thoughts or wants to be taken into count. She has been questioning herself as a woman, a human, and a spirit. Everything must be counted for, from a simple touch on the knee to a long kiss under the cold sky. , “ You have taught us more than anyone I know how wrong it is not to mix it with emotion, hunger, desire, lust, whims, caprices, personal ties, deeper relationships which change its color, flavor, rhythms, intensities.” when she wrote this part of the letter to her collector there strong ties to her words, a bound or memory connected to a deep part of her she is trying to discover her life. A rhythm that comes with sex when moving bodies against one another isn’t just moving because; it’s a communication of the person’s needs and wanted to meet those.
“Only the united beat of sex and heart together can create ecstasy.”
As she grew and come into her own and met more people with a free-willing mindset like her second husband and love Henry and June Miller a married couple she had an open intimate with during her first marriage. She learns that emotions, anger, happiness, and hurt aren’t pointless feelings but the key to more, and that makes erotica “Intellectual, imaginative, romantic, emotional. This is what gives sex its surprising textures, its subtle transformations, its aphrodisiac elements.” For it gives sex the build of intense pleasure, A love that doesn’t have to last a time but would be remembered for a lifetime.
“Sex does not thrive on monotony” by Anais Nin, a pioneer of female erotica, drives into the beautiful contract of sexual pleasure the needs and wants for more not just physically but emotionally, loving and to be vulnerable in its purest form. In reality, sex is a connection between lovers on a deeper level of pleasure, and emotions, a vulnerable level you share with respect for others and yourself. Yes sex is a physical act but one with the extension of surrealism and connection and should be treated as such.“for a lover, when he is aroused by true love, can run the gamut of centuries of love lore, What a range, what changes of age, what variations of maturity and innocence, perversity and art, natural and graceful animals.”
